What to look for in a healthy hedgehog:

1) Look at your hedgehogs face.  Are his eyes nice, round, beady, wide open, and bright without discharge?  Is his nose clean and not running? Are his ears short, clean with no discharge?

2) Is his fur on his belly soft and not matted?

3) Is his body plump?

4) Watch him walk.  Does he wobble or have difficulty staying upright?  His walk should be somewhere between a walk and a shuffle.

5) Can you hear a rattle when he is breathing? (do not confuse normal hedgehog talk such as chirping, huffing, etc as a pneumonia related rattle)

What do I need for my Hedgehog:

  1. Bedding - Aspen shavings, Care Fresh or Fleece Liners
  2. Food Bowl - Weighted so he can't tip it over
  3. Water Bottle
  4. Hiding Place - Igloo, Hedgie bag, etc
  5. Toys - Cat toys, small balls, anything that can be pushed or carried. Stay away from anything with loose parts that can cause a choking hazzard.
  6. Food - High Protein Low Fat Dry Cat Kibble
  7. Running Wheel - Large Solid Surface
